After waiting almost a whole month for the rain, yesterday I finally managed to sow the spring vegetables. Having too much work that needed to be done in one day I dag the beds quickly, and with the rain, we got last week and deep digging, the soil was great for sowing and planting.
I decided to make one big bed of onions. I used “Majski srebrenac” (May silver onions) this year. Usually, I’ve sown red onions in the spring, but this year I got the chance to buy early onions. These onions will be ready for harvest in late April, giving me enough time to clean and dig the bed and prepare it for summer vegetables. Of course, I bought too many sets and I have a whole extra bag. Maybe I’ll dig another bed and sow some more sets.
After the onions, I’ve transplanted the leek, which I’ve sown in July. The leek seedlings grew great, almost all of the seeds germinated so I got the luxury of choosing the best seedlings. I’ve decided to plant them in the group of 3 seedlings to be sure I won’t have empty patches. Also, I want to harvest baby leeks. As soon as the spring comes I will be pulling out some of the smaller plants, leaving the biggest ones to continue with their growth.
I’ve cut the leaves down and trimmed the roots before I’ve transplanted them. Some say it should be done, others are against it. I do it to encourage root growth and to stop the leaves from falling all over the bed, and as you can see the leaves were already huge.
I’ve cut them with my new garden scissors. I bought them in an online hardware store for just 2€ but they are actually amazing. Hubby needed some building materials and tools so we searched for a reasonably priced store and we found one that also sold garden tools. I immediately noticed these scissors on a huge sale(there were only 2 scissors left) and got them. They are great, really sharp, and light. I can even cut smaller tree branches and sunflowers with no problem. They even came with a 2-year warranty so I can say this was an amazing buy.
Hubby also got me some garden labels he came across in our local household items store. I decided against using markers to label the vegetables. Instead I made paper labels which I’ve secured with transparent duck tape to protect them from rain. This way I will be able to reuse them.
I’ve also sown some Lamb’s lettuce and winter lettuce to have some greens in early spring.
While I was harvesting kale I came across many eaten leaves. Something has been chewing my kale leaves and honestly, I couldn’t be happier about it. 😀
Even with all the eaten leaves I still have plenty of kale to harvest and I can’t even look at it anymore. I can’t just leave it to rot so I harvest the leaves and hate it. Let’s hope the bugs will be hungry enough and won’t leave me much. 😂
