Weird pumpkin identified

A few weeks ago, I’ve noticed a pumpkin-like plant growing next to my rhubarb. I haven’t sown any of my zucchinis or pumpkins here, so I had no idea which plant it was. When it first started growing I thought it could be watermelon, but as the leaves were getting bigger I was certain that it was some kind of pumpkin.

The vine continued growing like mad, so I guessed it could be pumpkin, but the problem is that I haven’t sown any pumpkins in a very long time. Sure, the birds could have brought the seeds, but no one is growing pumpkins close to my garden, so I had no idea what kind of pumpkin it could be.

This week finally the mystery was solved. The vine is actually the Round beauty zucchini. I’ve sown them in the spring, but on the top of the garden. I have no idea how the seeds got here, could be the birds or the downpour we had in May that dug out the seeds and took them all the way to the bottom of the garden. Considering the position of the grown plant I think the second option is more likely. The plant grew exactly under the path that leads from the top bed where the plant was actually sown.

This is actually the only zucchini that has fruits this year. Due to the bad weather, and severe drought we’re having, my zucchinis can’t form fruits. The plants bloom in millions of flowers, but none of them give fruits. This is the second year I have had no zucchinis. Last year the weather was too cold and this year too hot. Next year I’m thinking I will grow some zucchinis in the compost bags in the yard. Maybe they will give fruits.

This zucchini is just starting but it’s a real question of how long it will survive. The last rain activated powdery mildew and it’s already covering most of the leaves. The mornings are getting cold and if this continues there won’t be many fruits more on the misplaced zucchini.

I guess this zucchini is a perfect example of how easily things can end up at the bottom of a downhill garden.

Pumpkin/Squash/Zucchini/Gourd/Melon – So much confusion. That one certainly is a runner! The school wanted orange pumpkins for Halloween, but then they thought the young fruit were courgettes/Zucchini. Fortunately I stopped them before they harvested. This is the sort of thing that refuses to grow when you treat them real good and then self sow from the compost heap. Also like tomatoes that grow on gravel paths.
