Harvests in August

August is the month when my garden is making the most fruits and harvests are the biggest. This year due to the very cold April and May my garden is a bit behind and doesn’t make the progress it should do in August. It looks like we’re still in July.
Tomatoes have waited until the middle of August to start producing fruits, which is almost a month later than usual. First came the green varieties, then yellow ones while the red ones are still not ripening. The only red tomatoes I have are the 10 seedlings I bought when I was buying peppers and of course, I have absolutely no idea which variety they are.

The kale and chard have continued growing like the last month and I’ve stored another couple of kilos this month. Nero di Toscana will even grow better once the weather gets colder so I should have plenty more harvests.
The first round of beans I’ve planted are all done, I’ve pulled out some and left 2 varieties that tend to recuperate and give a second harvest period. The second round of beans I’ve sown in July is already giving fruits so every 4 days I harvest at least a kilo of beans.

Zucchinis are standing still and not producing too many fruits, I get maybe one or two fruits in a couple of weeks, but pattypan squash has been excellent this August, and every time I harvest there are a couple of little squashes to harvest. I collect them while they are still very young so I can use them as zucchinis.

Carrots are surprising me this year and after 3 years of no fruits I have lots o carrots this year. I keep pulling the bigger ones out because there are too many carrots on the bed, using the leaves keeps me from buying carrots during the summer and also gives me the chance to have big fruits for the October harvest.

Cucumbers are a real problem past couple of years. I seriously don’t know what to do with them anymore. They just don’t like the weather we’re having. Cold springs keep them small with small leaves and the plants produce hundreds of flowers but the cucumbers stay really small. I haven’t had a cucumber over 4cm long this year. The August harvest is progressing good but because of the size of the fruits, the amount of pickled jars is very small.

Considering everything the harvests were not too bad this August. My fridge is full of beans, kale, and chard. Tomatoes are slowly turning red and peppers will soon be ready for harvest. If the weather doesn’t get really bad we should have a very good September.
