Monthly review: August

After an unusually rainy July, August has been less rainy and mildly warm. Over the past 10 years, we actually got used to very hot Augusts with temperatures over 35°C all through the month, but this year was a bit different. There were plenty of sunny days, but almost every week we got a break with cold wind and few days of colder weather so the temperature never jumped over 33°C.

We didn’t have too much rain, but we got an average amount of 120mm over the month. The rain was nicely distributed so we didn’t have any dry periods and no watering was needed in the garden. This is the second year in 20 gardening years that our water barrel hasn’t been used. At the beginning of August, we got a couple of large storms, one with hail but luckily it didn’t cause too much damage.

My garden in August has been doing pretty good, the blight infestation has been stopped on time and it didn’t continue destroying my plants. Cucumbers are still struggling, but I have a feeling that if September will be good they could still give me a decent harvest.

As for the rest of the garden, I really haven’t been working much in it. I did my planned harvests, but I gave up on the weeding. The end of the gardening year is soon here and I’m not worried about the weeds anymore, I will pull them out once I start cleaning the garden for deep digging. Also, I’ve been having some health and skin issues that have been making my gardening difficult. The pills I’m currently taking are keeping me away from the garden because I’m not allowed to go in the sun, also my dyshidrosis is giving me hand and feet wounds which I have to keep away from the soil and that’s a difficult task if you garden every day. I hope it will go away soon and I’ll be back to my everyday digging and garden rolling.
