Non-woven seedling bags

Recently I discovered the non-woven seedling bags and now they are becoming my main seedling pot.

They aren’t available in my country so I have to order them from Aliexpress but still, it is worth it. They are fairly cheap. 100 pieces are from $1 to $2 depending on size and there are many different sizes available.

The main thing I love about them is that they are biodegradable so they can be transplanted directly to the garden with the plant. They can be removed as they will not rot while they are out of the soil but as soon as you plant them they will simply start to disappear. I’ve planted them last year and I didn’t come across any of the smaller ones in the soil while I was deep digging the garden. I did pull out a few unbroken ones on my tomatoes but this was because tomatoes are on the sunny part of the garden and they didn’t get enough rain. The ones that were on the shaded part which has more moisture are completely gone.

Another great thing is that the roots can easily grow through the bag so there is really no need to remove them, the only reason for not planting them I can find is that if you remove the bag you can use it next year. Still, when you calculate the price this becomes unnecessary.

I’ve ordered two sizes, the smallest ones and the biggest. The smallest is great for transplant-resistant flowers, onions, lettuces, cabbages, and pepper starts. Peppers can’t stay in them until transplanting time in May because they are too small, this is where big ones come in hand. The big ones can take up to 600ml of soil and are big enough to grow two seedlings of tomatoes or peppers in them. I didn’t grow zucchinis in them but I’m guessing they would be excellent for that too.

They don’t retain water so plants need to be watered every day which could be a problem with plants that don’t like direct watering. But this can be solved by placing them in a box or container and watering under them.

The small ones tend to fall down if are not supported, while the big ones are made so they have a bottom and stand perfectly no matter where you place them.
The thing that I also love is the little space they take. You can crowd them together, placing more plants in a small container and each plant will still be separated and have its own soil. The shape with the space they have and you can always push one more bag in the greenhouse.

While they are not in use they take very little space and hundreds can be stored in a small box. I ordered 500 pieces last year and they came in a small envelope. I keep them in a shoebox and they don’t take even half of the box.

If you like a pot you can transplant directly with the plant and have a desperate lack of space in the greenhouse then this is a great product for you. I know I will keep using them and maybe even replace every other pot with these bags.

I ordered some after seeing them in your last post! I would like to find some smaller ones to use instead of plastic cells.
