After a long cold period, we jumped right into summer. Daily temperatures are well over 20°C, somedays reaching over 25°C with a clear sky and full sun.
This kind of weather is actually torturing my seedlings which are now on greenhouse temperatures over 35°C and that’s with the front side opening. Nights are now warm enough to leave the tomatoes and peppers outside so I don’t have to carry them around.
The onion and cabbage seedlings are growing nicely and I should divide them to separate containers in the next couple of days. I’m thinking I will do this on Monday.
In the garden, the situation is not so great. We desperately need some rain. We haven’t had any decent rain in the last 3 months and the soil is really dry. I have to water the sown beds or the seeds would just stand there like they have been thrown on the sand. I can’t remember if we had any year like this. Usually, my problem with sowing was because of excess water. Now we’re just struggling with dry soil.
On Thursday I’ve sown some beans. I usually sow a box of early beans in March that gives me early fruits if the spring is not too cold and then I sow the rest of the seeds at the beginning of May. This year the early ones are really late and I have a feeling both early and later beans will come together.
So far I’ve filled 4 beds out of 14 and those 4 I have to water almost every day. I’m hoping the rain will come soon because if I’ll have to water all the seedlings in May that will be a huge problem. I will not be able to water with a hose and will need to water with the bucket and warm water and carrying buckets around the garden is a real pain.
When the Easter break finishes I will have to start preparing my nets and poles for my seedlings.
I think I will buy some tomato seedlings and some peppers just to have some early vegetables.
I’m seriously considering giving up on sowing tomatoes and peppers. I think next year I will sow other vegetables. It’s starting to be too much of a problem to have nice seedlings on time. I fill my greenhouses with tomatoes and peppers and then I have no room for the rest of the things.
I’ve stopped growing flowers and each year I have fewer and fewer flowers in the garden. I think next year I will buy tomatoes and peppers and fill the greenhouse with flower seedlings. It just feels sad with no perennial flowers in the garden.
