End of the April is usually a great time to transplant cabbages and early flower seedlings. Temperatures can still drop around 0°C but not so much that they could hurt the seedlings. Tomatoes and peppers are more delicate and they can get frozen, but the cabbage won’t.
So I’ve done my transplanting this week. This year I’ve sown two varieties of early cabbages Atria and Greyhound, Nero and curly kale, and white and pink cauliflower.
My seedlings are still a bit small due to the cold March mornings that didn’t give my seedlings a chance to grow enough but they will be bigger very quickly.
Instead of planting them in the shade like I did every year, this year my seedlings got the middle bed which is partly in the sun and partly in the shade. I’m hoping this will make them grow heads quicker because last year they started making heads in time when I had to deep dig the garden(late October).
I’ve also started my pole beans. Long beans were started early because for some unknown reason when I sow them directly they don’t germinate but when I sow them in cups they all germinate.
I’ve also sown some purple beans.
This year I decided against pole net for beans. Each year I placed a net, but due to the fact that we’re on the hill, I had to use very big poles to hold it, and I had to drill holes with special drilling tools. This year I gave up on this idea because this is a too hard job for me, especially the net placing because the net should be 1,8m and I’m too short to do it normally. So this year I did the separate poles with strings that will hold the beans. In the middle of every cone, I’ve planted some zucchinis to fill the middle. The beans will give them shade and keep them from the wind.
The soil is still very very dry and unusually warm for this time of year so I had to water the beds and will still need to water them if we don’t get any rain soon.
It has been so warm that all my lamb’s lettuce started flowering in just a couple of days.
Still, it looks really pretty.
So far I did 12 out of 16 beds. I still have lots of work but there’s no point in doing it if we don’t get some rain soon. The tomato, pepper, and cucumber beds will be cleared next week, I don’t plan to rush the seedling planting. with this crazy year who knows what will happen until May 15th.
