A few years back I got a big old wooden potato box. I’ve painted it and used it to store wood during the winter and as a flower planter during the summer. It was tall enough to plant long-rooted plants and wide enough to plant multiple layers of flowers.
This year I was thinking about using the box to plant multiple flower bulbs and keep it flowering all the year, but due to the virus, I didn’t get the chance to buy the bulbs I wanted. So throughout the spring, my box was pretty much empty. I had some garlic cloves left and some lettuce seeds so I’ve filled the box just so it wouldn’t be empty. Then I added some parsley I had leftover from the cooking and this made me think that this box would be a good vegetable box. So a few weeks back I’ve decided to finally take care of the box.
I’ve harvested all the onions, parsley, and garlic.
and planted some gladioli in the front row of the box, just to give it some flower look from the far, because the planter is visible from the street.
I’ve transplanted some onions I had in the garden, parsley from my herb shelf, and some dwarf tomato seedlings. There was an empty spot in the corner so I’ve also added lemongrass and my small veg garden was done.
I wasn’t sure if all the plants would work together but it seems they all work well together. Plants keep getting bigger.
I’m using parsley and onion leaves for everyday cooking, tomatoes are growing flowers and unlike garden tomatoes, they are completely healthy. Gladioli were a bit late due to the colder spring and just started growing, but in a couple of weeks, they should grow enough to give some shade to parsley and tomatoes and hide them from the very strong sun we get in this part of the yard.
Maybe next year this will indeed be a flower box.
