After a very cold beginning of the month, the end brought us the heat we’ve been missing and turned this month into an average month with above-average rainfall.
But let’s start from the beginning.
June has made us heat hungry and the beginning of July continued with this trend. We got a few warmer afternoons, but mornings were very cold for our standards and of course, this affected our vegetables. Most of my vegetables were falling behind, some like cucumbers and tomatoes have started turning yellow from the cold and I was starting to get worried.
Luckily middle of the month brought us warmer weather and although we were having showers almost every day the temperatures were finally reaching over 25°C. As soon as we got some heat blackberries started to turn black and the blackberry season started. I’ve been harvesting them for over 2 weeks and now they are finishing their season. We’ll probably get a couple more harvests and that’s it.
My peppers seemed to enjoy the hotter days we’ve been getting and some of the peppers recuperated enough to start giving fruits. We won’t have a big harvest this year, but after the weather in May and June, I’m happy with every fruit we get.
Beans have been the star of the month. The warm weather with lots of rain (170 liters) gave them the perfect conditions for producing beans. I’ve been harvesting them once or even twice a week and I’m hoping this period will last long.
The warmth and showers have also been generous for the flowers. They have been growing and flowering each day more, they are still trying to catch up on the lost height.
The end of July gave us first tomatoes, still, the plants are visibly affected by the cold start. They are very small and by the looks, they will give us only one harvest. I don’t think there will be a second one. Still, fruits are healthy and tasty.
The one thing that has been growing like mad are the weeds, they have been everywhere. I’ve cleaned the whole garden twice this month and if the showers continue I’ll have to do it at least twice more in August.
After this month my plants have recovered a bit and have started to grow nicely, but they are still much smaller than they should be. Let’s hope we’ll get an extended season during October and November to make up for the lost time.
