Although smaller, my harvests are still regular. I harvest my vegetables every 4-5 days depending on the weather forecast.
Yesterday I’ve harvested some lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, beans, carrots, kohlrabi, a cabbage, and some strawflowers which I’ll try to dry.
The warmth and rain-free weather have stopped my beans and for now, I’m harvesting only purple beans and Berggold yellow beans which are a bit more resistant to heat, the rest of the beans have stopped producing, but are starting to flower again so soon I’ll have more beans. If the conditions are good I get up to 3 harvest periods from the same bean plants.
Carrots have been amazing this year. Last year I’ve decided against buying orange carrots and I went with yellow. I bought “Ljubljanska žuta” a Slovenian native carrot and it was a great choice. The carrots are completely healthy, growing without any problems, and keep on growing while I thin them out.
They are always smaller than the orange ones but there are no rotten carrots or problems with germination. I prefer smaller carrots that are healthy than the rotten big ones.
I’ve harvested the last of my kohlrabi, but there will be more soon. The roots which I’ve left in the ground are already forming new kohlrabi and they will be soon big enough for a second harvest.
I’ll leave the roots in the ground again, if the weather will be good maybe I’ll get another harvest.
Cucumbers which I’ve sown on the sunny side are almost done. I’ve been harvesting here, but not as much as earlier. Now the ones that are in the shade are better and the ones in the sun are dying. I’ll be pulling them out soon and after deep digging, I’ll plant my May onions. May onions will be in the soil over the winter and I’ll harvest them in early May just in time to plant other vegetables here.
As for the front yard grapes are almost ready, they are already sweet and half-eaten by the birds and bugs so I’ll harvest them this week. I’ll probably give them to my mum to make some juice or we’ll be eating them fresh.
I’ll do another harvest this week on Sunday before the weather change on Monday. It will probably be similar to the one today and then next week I should start deep digging. I absolutely hate deep digging.
