Preparing for a new season

Although this season is almost over, my balcony is slowly filling with new pots and trays. I’ve decided to do a big change in my gardening. No more empty garden during the winter. I will try to keep the garden alive during the whole year, with the exception of the snow period. I already bought onion sets, winter lettuce, I have sown summer leek for winter leek seedlings, and I have chard seedlings also ready for transplanting and early spring harvest.

I’ll be showing some of the vegetables indoors around Christmas to have early seedlings ready for February and March.

After ordering my new seeds I also decided to go through my seed bags quickly and see if there’s anything that can be sown now. I’ve decided to sow Aloe vera and Cactuses. They will be kept in the house so it really doesn’t matter when they are sown. I’ve also decided to do a small experiment and I’ve sown Salvia, Digitalis, Dianthus, and Pyrethrum. Usually, these are plants that are sown in spring or early summer, but due to the cold summers and short seasons many times it happens that they don’t get the time to bloom. So I decided to sow them now and will try keeping them inside during the winter. I have enough seeds to sow them again in spring, but I want to see if the early sowing will help them bloom faster.

When I finished sowing the flowers I decided to put some more seed trays to use and I’ve sown some onions. I’ll use them as green onions during the autumn. I bought the Red baron variety. As soon as they grow big enough for harvest I’ll start a new tray to keep the continuous harvest. Both my hubby and I adore green onions, especially in salads so it will be good to have plenty of onions.

I’ve also cut lavender and Curry plants and made some cuttings for next year. If enough of them let out roots I will remove the old huge lavender bushes and replace them with young seedlings. They will make a good live border for my new garden flower bed.

All these trays will stay on the balcony as long as the temperatures will allow it. After the last rain period temperatures have dropped to 20°C(68°F) but the balcony is still warm enough. The next couple of days should be warmer so the germination conditions should be perfect. Also, the garden should finally start drying and I’ll be able to harvest and dig. Right now it’s still too wet to walk although it has been 2 days since the rain.
