After a week of late spring warmth, we jumped back to the winter. In just 24h temperatures dropped from 15°C(59°F) to 0°C(32°F). Rain, which started on Friday, quickly changed into the snow covering the garden and the yard. The good thing about this is that although it is much colder, the temperatures are still above zero so I can keep the brassicas outside. There is no room on the shelves for them, and I can’t keep them on the floor since they won’t get any light. So now I’m keeping them outside in the cold during the day, and inside during the night. It’s still better than keeping them in a warm and dark space the whole week.
The seedling shelves are full
At the beginning of the week, I’ve sown another batch of my seeds. This time I went with a bunch of seeds that were left outdoors such as flowers, chard, and early zucchinis, and indoors I’ve sown watermelons, melons, corn, and early cucumber and zucchini seedlings. The idea is to have some very early seedlings which, if the weather will be good in April, will go in the garden. If we’ll still have frost danger, I will plant these seedlings in pots and leave them on the balcony. The rest of these seeds will be sown around the beginning of April, also indoors since this year I’m trying to avoid direct sowing almost completely.
The situation on the shelves is good. Most of the tomatoes are out, peppers have started growing finally, and the newly sown vegetables such as corn and amaranth are already germinating. I’ve cut off the tips of the chili peppers this week to encourage bushy growth, and soon I’ll have to transplant them to bigger pots. The eggplants should also go to bigger pots, but all of this will be done once it gets a bit warmer to be able to throw some more seedlings outside.
Plans for this week
When it comes to plans for this week, there are no plans. There is too much snow to do anything outside. We’ll have to wait for another crazy warmer week, which should come around Saturday, to do outdoor and indoor work . This week I’ll concentrate on house chores and cleaning. I’m still not feeling too great, and the cough is still bugging me, but I’m sure it will be ok soon. There’s too much work around, and I don’t have time to be sick, once the snow melts, of course.
