New plants in the garden

A week of sun and heat is just enough for the seeds to germinate and show their little leaves. Of course, no plants would be present without everyday watering, but with the right amount of water, sun and heat a week is more than enough for the garden seeds to germinate.

I’m satisfied with the number of seeds that have germinated. I have more than enough plants for autumn and with the seedlings on the balcony, I can be certain I’ll have fresh vegetables until November.

All of the lettuces that I’ve sown are out, and growing really good. I’ve sown them densely so that I’d have baby lettuce for thinning.

There’s also a couple of rows of cutting lettuce mix which will be perfect for autumn.

Zucchinis are also all out and growing, these varieties should give fruits in a month. If they’ll grow quickly, soon they will catch up with the rest of my zucchinis.

The beans I have sown have different germination results. Some are 100% successful, and others not so much, but there will be plenty for late production. The best variety is again “Piedmont wonder”, which is already twice the size of the rest of the beans.

If the rest of the earlier sown beans fail due to the lack of water, these ones should give fruits right around the time of the September rain, so I’m confident that I’ll have plenty of beans in the autumn.

Next week I have to transplant some of the earlier sown lettuce seedlings and chard. We should get some rain soon, so it will be easier to transplant them without having to water them twice a day.

I’m looking forward to seeing if the tray-grown lettuces will have time to grow heads in the autumn, or I’ll have a bunch of old baby-looking lettuces.
