Garden review: July

We haven’t even properly started this gardening season, and we’re already in the second half of the season. Plants are already in full harvest, temperatures are at their peak, and before we’ll realize we’ll be cleaning the garden and getting ready for the new winter.

This July has been really hot and dry, with only two rainy days (03.07 and 16.07). Both days brought us 30mm of rain in two showers, so who knows how much of the rain actually stuck in the soil. The drought has been so intense that for the first time in 3 years, I had to mulch the garden. I’ve used fresh grass to mulch which has been dry in just a couple of hours. Soon I’ll have to mow the grass again, and I’ll place another layer of mulch on my plants. The way summer is going, I think that the heat will continue.

Although the heat has been very intense, I’ve been harvesting nice amounts of vegetables. All of the vegetables are now making fruits, except for the zucchinis, which are still waiting.

For the first time in many years, I’ve been harvesting cucumbers throughout July. The slicing cucumbers seedlings, which I bought from a family farm, have been producing cucumbers despite the lack of water and heat. Some of the plants are completely sunburned, but still producing fruits.

July also brought another order of seeds and plants. Now I have all the seeds I need for a fulfilled autumn.

I’ve also got a bunch of new house plants and some wonderful new gardening books and cookbooks for my birthday, so now my house is full of new plants.

The end of July was a perfect time to start digging the free beds for the new flower border. But, since there hasn’t been any rain in the past 15 days, the beds are still waiting to be sown.

All in all, July has been a good month. A bit too warm and dry, but the plants are still growing, and all of them are healthy. I hope August will be less warm and with more rain. There’s a lot of work in the garden that needs to be done during August, so we need a nice time to do it all.
