First pepper transplanting

The last possible frost date in this region of Croatia is May 15th, still this year some of my seedlings just couldn’t wait so long. Some of the peppers started growing buds and turning yellow, and I decided that it was time to transplant. Of course, I didn’t want to transplant any to the big garden. The soil there is still cold, and if the rain continues, the garden will be hard to reach. I wanted to transplant my seedlings somewhere where they can be easily reached and hidden if the temperatures still manage to drop under zero. So this week my chili peppers ended up in old buckets and pots and bell peppers in the new veggie garden.

Since the first time I’ve sown chili peppers, I’ve always planted them in the buckets and pots. The reason is that this way I can keep them in the front yard in the sun, water them regularly and hide them from the bad weather. I’ve planted chili peppers in the garden just once and they were tiny, without a big bush and they froze in early September. The only hot peppers that I plant in the garden are our fefferoni peppers. They are used to our conditions and grow well in the garden.
This year I’ve planted 7 chili pepper seedlings, but honestly, I have no idea which plant is where. I wrote the names on the little sticks and the writings faded. I will know my peppers once the fruits start growing. They are all completely different and will be easy to identify.

I’ve also transplanted some peppers to the new veggie garden. The peppers weren’t planned here, but since I have lots of empty space, I decided to plant some peppers here to test if they will like this spot. The garden will be in the sun in the early morning and late afternoon and will avoid the damaging sun during the early afternoon hours. Maybe this spot will work well for the peppers too. Also, I can easily cover the peppers if the temperatures drop too low, and I can cover the garden if there will be a storm. I pass dozens of times during the day next to this garden, and I can quickly take action if anything happens. The rest of the peppers will be transplanted to the big garden in May.

I still have one empty bed in the new garden which I’ll fill once my hubby builds a terrace wall. I’ll probably transplant some tomatoes or cucumbers here, but this I’ll decide after planting the big garden.  Also, next year I will have to buy more seeds and grow more seedlings. There is plenty of space in the garden now, and we can maybe even grow a yearly amount of veggies. Hopefully, the weather will help us do it.
