Monthly review: April

April really flew by. I have a feeling that I wrote a March review a week ago and it’s already time to write about April. Probably because we didn’t have any big weather changes, and the whole month looked like it was just one day over and over.

After the first few cooler days, in the beginning, the rest of April was fairly warm, with a nice amount of rain and lots of wind. We entered the weekly pattern, where we get rain every weekend. This has stopped our garden renovation, and we’ve been doing only things that can be finished in a couple of hours a day, but still, it was nice to get all the rain after a very dry winter. The 111mm of rain will most definitely help the garden recover from the drought and the 95mm we got during the past 4 months( December-March).

The March winds continued through April and in the end, we had 8 days with yellow to orange wind warnings and almost no days without any wind. Even the warmest days with a maximum temperature of 23.4°C were still windy. Luckily there was no frost in April. We only had one day with a temperature below zero, but the frost temperature lasted less than an hour, so there was no damage at all. All the plants are healthy and growing, and this could be a good fruit year if we don’t get a sudden storm.

The showery weather helped wake up nature, and now all the plants are awake and the hills are green again. The cold March kept everything dormant, so the warmth of April made everything explode. All the plants started growing at the same time, so we had early March flowers, like violas, growing together with Oxeye daisies, which normally grow at end of April. The only thing that is still sleeping is Black locust trees, which will start flowering in the middle of May.

My garden has also woken up abruptly. After a long wait period, the flowers are here, the grass is growing, and the garden is waking up. The veggies that should have grown in March, started showing up in the middle of April, and now the soil temperature and the veggie size in the garden are at early April rates. This week I’ve trimmed the garden grass for the first time this year, and things are finally starting to look like we’re actually in spring.

May is the busiest month in our garden, and hopefully, it will be similar to April, with enough rain, warm days, and maybe less wind. There will be lots of things that will need to be done. Seedlings are waiting for transplanting, I need to sow July seedlings, we need to finally build new steps and finish the side garden. There’s also lots of planting, weeding and grass trimming that will be done, and hopefully, we’ll have nice weather to do everything. April was a good month, hopefully, May will be even better.

I'm hoping for a warmer May with enough rain preferably in the evening, April was very dry and on average quite cold.
