Tomatopedia: Rose quartz multiflora

Rose quartz multiflora is a tomato variety I got 3 years ago and have been sowing it every year since then. When I got it there was very little to almost no information about it so I didn’t know much about it. Its origin isn’t known, the only information I got was that it’s from Japan. This tomato has very specific fruit growth. It makes flower clusters that, in good years, can reach up to 100 tomatoes per cluster.

This tomato has pinkish, juicy cherry-sized fruits that are very sweet. If left to fully ripe they can be almost too sweet. It is perfect for raw usage and salads, it isn’t suitable for cooking or drying because it mainly contains water, with very little meat in the middle so if you dry it the only thing that will be left in the skin.

Its leaves are regular-sized, it’s indeterminable, open-pollinated, and mid-season plant. But then its size is a question for me. Some say that it will grow s a regular cherry tomato, up to 2m but in my case that isn’t so. The plant in my garden is fairly small. In the years that were warmer, it grew around 1,5m and was nowhere near the cherry size(notice on the photo how the cherry is twice the size)

This year when the spring was extremely cold and we have a lot of rain it is almost dwarf size. The clusters are also smaller but they still have at least 25 tomatoes on each cluster. I’m seriously considering an experiment and growing it in a hanging basket next year and see how it will act.

Rose quartz is an early tomato that takes 65-75 days to mature, in my garden it is one of the first tomatoes that comes and if the year is good it lasts till the first frost dates.

Sowing is done as in every other tomato variety. 6-8 weeks before the last frost date it should be sown indoors, in the good substrate, and watered regularly. It can be transplanted after the last frost date(in my case May, 15th) and it will give its first fruits around the end of July.

If you want a delicious tomato that you can eat while you’re in the garden or use it in salads and as a decoration then Rose quartz is the right tomato for you.
