Malakhitovaya shkatulka (Malachite box) is an old Russian variety that’s known for its specific color and size. It got its name from a green box that was made from a mineral in the Ural.
This indeterminate variety has been developed by Svetlana farm and tested in Siberia.
Unlike most tomatoes, this variety likes colder weather and can fully mature even in places that don’t get too much sun.
Its color is much lighter green than most of the other green tomato varieties and when it’s ready for picking it gets a yellowish tone. It can easily get mushy and if left too long the meat turns completely into water and can burst when squeezed.

Fruits are medium-sized, oval, or round but in many cases, they can have irregular shapes and even crack.

The taste of the fruit is sweet with a touch of sour and depends a lot of the time when the fruit is harvested. Fruits are very juicy and are best for cooking. They can’t be dried and in salads, they tend to release lots of juice making the salads watery.
The leaves are regular shaped and although it is indeterminate in outdoor production they will not grow over 2m.

The plant needs 75-85 days to mature so it should be sown 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. It will take around 20 days to germinate and needs a temperature over 25°C for successful germination.
Although the plant likes cooler summers it doesn’t tolerate wet summers and is very poorly resistant to blossom end rot and blight.
Each fruit contains enough seeds that can be easily collected.

Malakhitovaya is an ideal tomato for people that are searching for a big fruit, cooking tomatoes, and will make a great flavor in salsa and stews.
