New year – new gardening room

Over the past 15 years, my gardening supplies and seedlings have been a burden to the whole family. I have been moved dozens of times, without a proper place to work, from the garage to the chicken coop, from the yard back to the garage. I’ve been sowing on the folding tables, chairs, floor, even on top of the trash bins. My portable greenhouses have been moved dozens of times, each year I carried them inside the garage during the winter, then back out in the spring, moved them around the yard when they were in the way and they never had a real place.

I kept my seedlings in all the house windows, kept them warm in front of the stove and carried them in and out twice a day.

It wasn’t too difficult for me until the last year when I snapped.
When my hubby and I made our own flat on the second floor of the house, we made an outside entrance with outside stairs. Because of the floor plan, there was no other way but to place the stairs in the exact spot when I kept my seedlings during April and May. I had to move them to the other side of the house, where they didn’t get enough sun or heat, and with the cold April and May that we had my seedlings were poor and really really small. They were so small that we even made an emergency growing corner in out wardrobe trying to save them.

I said to my hubby that this couldn’t go on and that there is no point in growing seedlings if I don’t have anywhere to place them. So our family came to an agreement and I finally got my own gardening room. One of our basements has two rooms, one big and one smaller, I got the male part of the family to move their tools and things to the other room and I got my own place to store my gardening stuff. The room has water so I won’t have to carry the water around and plenty of space to place all my things and to grow seedlings.
I’ve asked my hubby to help me bring in everything and today we made a plan and started planing the room.

We brought in my green coffin which will be used to sow peppers and for germination of all the other plants with growing lights and heating. We bought a bunch of LED growing strips which will be filled with LED white strips and with heating coils to give the perfect conditions.

An old freezer will be a perfect working table and a storage chest or pots that I can’t get rid of but don’t use at the moment.

I’ve also got a huge shelf which is big enough to store all my things and has two perfect-sized shelves which will also be made into growing shelves for bigger seedlings. The temperature here will be lower than in the green coffin but the lighting will be a bit stronger just perfect condition for some older seedlings.

I will probably still sow some of the things outside in cups and pots, I’m thinking of bringing my green shelf to the second-floor balcony which is the warmest place in the whole yard and I think I’ll sow here plants that aren’t too delicate such as cabbages, onions, and lettuces.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, mostly by my hubby since I’m an idiot when it comes to electricity and soldering iron but I’m sure we’ll finish it in time.

I can say that for the first time in many years I’m really happy and looking forward to the sowing season without a worry.
