Last year in February we lost our loved dog Nero. Since we have Srećko(happy) who doesn’t like other dogs, animals, bugs, people, or cars getting another dog wasn’t an option. Still, fate decided to intervene and 8 months ago our neighbor who runs a dog shelter was in trouble of accommodating a dog litter that was abandoned. So we decided to give one of the puppies a foster home. Peggy came to us and the adventure began.
Since that day we sheltered 7 dogs. They all found a forever home, some sooner some later.
There have been many sleepless nights, lots of eating, chewing, peeing all around the house, barking, playing and goofing around.
One of the most difficult cases we had was Dexter. Dexter came to us in a very difficult condition and honestly I wasn’t sure he’d make it. He was severely beaten, he had dog bites all over his legs, he was anemic, frozen, in pain, and skinny.
We had to give him antibiotics, vitamins, and painkillers multiple times a day. When he got here he couldn’t walk so I had to carry him outside to pee every couple of hours. He would just sleep.
On top of everything, he was positive for parvovirus so we were really worried he wouldn’t pull through. But he did, his walk was every day getting better, he started gaining weight and in a couple of weeks, he was a completely healthy puppy.
Next, we gave a foster home to Nera. Nera was a dog with a home, but was abandoned for her “bad behavior”.
Having Srećko, a dog that has serious problems with his behavior, due to the fact that he was severely abused before he came to us Nera didn’t seem to us like a very “bad” dog. She seems more like a dog that didn’t get the proper care and now she was showing signs of this. She doesn’t like to be touched if she doesn’t want to be touched, she reacts aggressive to aggression, she’s terrified of little kids and other dogs, she didn’t know how to play with any toys(!) and since she is already a 4yr old dog this is difficult to correct.
But we did learn how to behave outside, how to play, how to cuddle. She still doesn’t fully trust people and there is still a long journey ahead of her but, she’s getting there.
She learned that nature, grass, yard, and bugs aren’t a bad thing, she even started to garden with me.
She was here for 2 months and last week she finally found her forever home.
After Nera came a little ball of silliness called Disney.
I’m certain that he won’t be the last dog we’ll be fostering.
And srećko… he’s not too happy about it, but he tolerates them as long as they don’t touch him.
We live in a house with my parents, but we have our own flat on the second floor with our own entrance there is no problem with having two dogs that don’t spend time together. Srećko doesn’t like to be in the yard alone anyway, so I take him outside 5 times a day and the rest of the day he spends on the balcony and in the house. He’s been getting older now, his paws can’t run like they did before, his nose is turning grey, he sleeps more and he’s happier without the drama that puppies bring and likes to keep his eye on them from the distance.
