New tomato season

My tomato season usually started in late February or early March. I used the fire stove to make my seeds germinate faster and later in April I kept my seedlings in an outdoor wooden greenhouse to make them grow faster. Past two years I’m not able to do this. I have air-conditioned heating in my apartment so no speedy germination and the spot where I had my greenhouse is now taken with stairs so I have nowhere to make my seedlings grow faster. That is why this year I started sowing much earlier than before. I’ve sown peppers 2 weeks ago. Some of them like Somborka and Buena mulata already germinated and I’m hoping the rest of them will start soon.

Because of the longer germination, I decided to sow tomatoes this week. This year I’ve sown 20 tomato varieties, 6 of them are new varieties I didn’t have before. I didn’t bother to count the seeds this year. I decided to use more seeds and sow them in bigger containers and when I see how many I have I will transplant them to separate the seedlings.

I used the same Genox disinfectant to spray the soil and seeds just to be on the safe side with the Pythium rot.

With the tomatoes, I’ve also sown another bunch of flower seeds. Most of them are annuals and need a longer time to germinate. Also, I’ve already started some early cabbages, kale, and Brussels sprouts. I need them to grow early to avoid problems with moisture and cold in October and November.

I’m hoping all of the seeds will start growing in the next 3 weeks. If everything starts growing in February I’ll have nice big seedlings for May.

It will be a while before we sow tomatoes here.

Such a shame… Our tomato seedlings have chewed by the crickets and worms. Hope you have a good luck.
