Rain and heatwave

After a very rainy May, June started exactly the same. Most of the days were rainy with lots of short showers. Some of them turned into spring storms, while others would just make the garden wet for an hour and bring problems with blight on tomatoes and cucumbers.

The paths which I’ve managed to clean did the job that they were meant for and there was no damage in the garden during the shower floods. The water was taken away from the beds and there were no pulled-out vegetables.

Then 10 days ago the things changed and we jumped in summer without any prior preparation. We jumped from March temperatures straight to July weather and temperatures over 35°c(95°F). Morning temperatures also rise over 20°C(68°f) which made nights difficult to bear even for the animals. Srećko refuses to be outside and won’t leave the air conditioner. He only goes out after 10pm, during the day it seems like I don’t have a dog at all.

In just 10 days garden has turned from overly wet to really dry. Paths have started to crack and that’s the sign that the garden is overheating. Due to the cold spring, the shade plants didn’t have the time to grow tall enough, but the vegetables don’t seem to suffer much from the sun. It seems that they were so desperate for the heat that they are thriving in the heatwave.

There’s also lots of dust in the air and together with the heat, the air feels very stale. There’s no way to air the rooms. Even the sun doesn’t look normal. It’s coated in a dusty veil and looks more like a moon.

We can only garden in the early morning from 5am to 8am. Later it’s too hot and in the evening there are too many horseflies in the garden to be able to do anything. In the morning there are lots of mosquitoes but they go away with repellents so I can garden.

I’ve been cleaning the garden, harvesting, and even did some sowing. Finally, the grass stopped growing so much so I don’t have to mow it so often but there’s still lots of work in the garden. If only the temperatures weren’t so high we could do much more during the day.
