Although we had a really cold spring and long heatwave vegetables are growing without any issues and my harvests are getting bigger and bigger.
Beans did suffer from the extreme heat and they stopped producing flowers, but Blauhilde pole beans don’t seem to care much. Yes, the plants are smaller and there are not many leaves on the pole, but the beans are growing nicely and I’ve harvested them 2 times already.
Kibria cucumbers have also started producing fruits, the plants are still a bit small but they are getting bigger every day, fruits are healthy and well-shaped.
The lettuce which I’ve bought from the family farm is forming amazing heads. I can’t really remember when was the last time I had such big heads. I’ve always had problems with lettuce and the heat, but this lettuce doesn’t seem to mind the heat. It just continues to grow like mad.
My kohlrabi is also ready for its first harvest. If the summer lasts long enough I’ll again have at least 3 harvests from the same root.
With everything growing so nicely it was no surprise that my harvest bag was completely full today. I’ve harvested almost all the vegetable varieties that can be found in my garden. Only cabbages and tomatoes are still not ready for harvests.
I brought home lettuce, chard, leeks, cucumbers, bean, peppers, kale, kohlrabi, beet leaves, and chives.
This is why I spent the whole afternoon in the kitchen steaming my vegetables and preparing them for winter storing. I’ve steamed kale, leek greens, chard and beans, chopped beet stems and cooked them for winter salad(I’ve made a fresh salad from beet leaves), chopped and froze chives, and made 4 jars of pickled vegetables. I’ve made whole peppers, pickles, fefferoni, and leek bulbs.
If the season continues like this my freezer and basement will fill up nicely this year.
