Another Wednesday, another harvest

I never plan my harvests, but somehow they are always on Wednesday. Probably because it’s the middle of the week. On Monday and Tuesday, I always do the most urgent things, and then on Wednesday, I have time to harvest. Last week my harvest was really big, so this week I wasn’t expecting much. Also, temperatures are again over 30°C (86°F), so I know I can expect smaller harvests. Still, I brought home a nice amount of vegetables.

Blackberries are now in the middle of the harvest period. I’m getting around a kilo per harvest. I harvest every two days. I should be harvesting every day, but these berries will be used in syrup, so there’s no need for them to be perfect. The rest of the vegetables I harvest once a week, there’s no need to force harvests in this weather.

Although I had a nice pepper harvest last week, my peppers were ready for another harvest today. It seems they enjoy this heat, and I don’t see any damage to the peppers or the plants. The cosmoses are doing their job and protect the fefferoni from the heat, and tomato peppers don’t seem to need any protection.

I’ve finally harvested my first two tomatoes today. Tomatoes are running late this year and most of them are still flowering. Probably because of the cold May and the beginning of June. I guess they lost a very important couple of weeks that would insure fruits in July.

I have the same problem with zucchinis. They are flowering, but there are no fruits yet. The bushes are smaller than they normally would be at this time of the summer. I’m hoping I’ll soon get some zucchinis. Bees are all over the flowers, so maybe they’ll make me some nice zucchinis.

Another flowering vegetable is beans. All of the beans are flowering right now, but only Blauhilde is making lots of pods. And the pods are huge. Definitely a perfect bean variety for the heat and drought.

I’ve also harvested almost all of the lettuce. I still have 2 heads around the beans that I left for the next harvest. I’ll be planting some more lettuce soon, and I already have some sown in the garden.

With the weather conditions and the setback we had in late spring, I’m pretty satisfied with the harvests right now. Still, we really need some rain, or the next harvests will be smaller every time.
