Garden diary: late summer sowing

Although August is considered a harvest month, in which we harvest the fruits of our spring and summer work, there is still plenty of time to sow new vegetables and prolong our gardening season. In previous years at this time, I would start thinking about a new gardening season and plan what I’ll buy and sow in next year. This year I decided to use every possible moment and sow until the last possible date.

New seeds

This is why I ordered a bunch of new seeds the previous week. Finally, one(and only decent) Croatian seed company started selling seeds online, and I was able to order a lot of new seeds. They are the only company that sells big packs of seeds and small professional bags, so I was really happy with the seeds.

I’ve ordered everything except for the tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. There is no more time to grow those vegetables, but the rest still have time to grow.

Main garden

On Monday I started cleaning and sowing new seeds in the main garden. Initially, the plan was to sow in the new orchard bed, but due to the prolonged drought, the soil is still too hard and lumpy for any kind of sowing. This is why I’ve sown most of the seeds in the main garden, and I’ll use the new beds for seedlings later in the month.

To sow my new seeds I had to remove some of the old vegetables, so I pulled out broad beans and harvested the rest of the onions and lettuce. Instead of them, I’ve sown snap beans, beets, radishes, lettuce, and peas.

Although I said I would not sow any more peas, I decided to give the seeds one more chance. I’ve bought peas which I’ll try and grow during the autumn. If the springs are too hot for the peas, maybe the autumn will be cold enough. At least there won’t be any danger of extreme temperatures in October.

Side garden

I have also cleaned the whole side garden. The side veggie garden is full now, so I only cleaned the weeds, but there was a lot of work in the steps area. After emptying some of the old veggie containers, I’ve moved them to a new location, and sown new vegetables. I’ve sown more cutting lettuce and radishes.

I’ve also decided to move my seedlings to a more shaded and shielded area. The north side could be very windy so I’ve moved the small containers into the unfinished drainage system. The drain is close to the house which has a roof, and the ivy will protect the containers from the wind.

To do all this, I had to move the brassicas to the other side. Now, they are all in the same spot, where they will remain until winter when I’ll move them to the second terrace. There’s a pool in this spot, so there’s no room for them right now.

I’m pretty satisfied with all the work I’ve managed to do this year. We made big progress in the yard and next year I just need to buy more plants to create a flower garden.
