My little side veggie garden is finally starting to look like a real garden. The rain which we had last weekend helped a lot, and I finally got the chance to clean the whole garden. It was a good decision to wait with the carrot cleaning since now that the rain fell it was much easier to remove the weeds from the bed. It turned out that, like in the main garden, carrots here weren’t a success. Out of the whole bed, only a small part is actually covered in carrots and I was left with a bunch of empty space.<\/p>\n

This is why I decided against the previous idea for this bed and I decided to grow everything here. This year I will try to grow every single vegetable that I grow in the main garden too and see which ones grow better where. This way next year I will have an idea of where to sow which veggies.<\/p>\n

So on the carrot bed, I’ve added some parsley, groundcherry, and two brassica seedlings, just to see how they will act in this new garden. I already have some flowers on this bed, mostly marigolds and nigellas since this bed are very close to the forest and these flowers don’t require a massive amount of sun hours.<\/p>\n

On my radish\/chard bed, there hasn’t been much change. I’ve sown some more chard and cleaned the weeds, and that’s pretty much all I did. This bed is growing well, and there’s no need to change it. I’ve added some amaranth on the upper side of the garden just as a decoration.<\/p>\n

The pepper\/tomato\/flower bed got a couple of seedlings of brassicas and was completely cleaned and dug. The tomatoes will need the new poles and peppers are finally starting to look better. One thing is certain, this is not a good spot for peppers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bean\/radish\/flower bed has been weeded and dug. Radishes will soon be ready for harvest and once I move them I’ll try sowing something else here. I’ll probably try some beet seedlings here. Or maybe even some leafy kale. I still have to decide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I’ve also removed parts of the paths between the beds and added another small border bed. Here I’ve sown some zucchinis. I never walk all the way to the fence, so this is a better way to use this small bit of soil. I can tend to this part of the garden from my herb bed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One bed that is still empty is the future cucumber bed. I’ve sown cucumbers for this bed to pots and will transplant them once the support wall is finished. Hubby is starting to make progress here and the bed will probably be done soon. Then I will dig this bed again and place a netting between the support beams. This will actually be a perfect spot for climbing veggies. The netting can be placed very fast, and the wall will protect them from the wind.<\/p>\n

One thing I didn’t take into consideration while planning the new garden is mud. We’ve placed gravel on all of the paths, and now the veggie garden is a bit of a problem during the rain period. It turns out that while hubby was working on the wall he muddied the whole gravel path. Now that I know this I’ve prepared myself, so now I have “special” small veggie garden shoes, which I wear inside the garden and take off before moving to the steps. Luckily the small basement door is direct across from the small veggie garden, so I can store all the things I need inside, including the shoes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Like I said in the beginning, the small veggie garden is starting to look like a real garden and I actually love how it looks. It is still a bit empty looking and missing some color, but once I finish with all the planting and finish making the small flower bed under the herb garden things should look different.<\/p>\n

Next week I don’t really have any plans for the side veggie garden, of course, other than digging and weeding. All of the veggies have been planted and for more work, I need to wait for the second terrace to be finished.
