After 2 weeks of cold and wind, we finally got some sunny weather and I’ve decided to do my first garden sowing of the year. This year I’ve started a whole month later than last year. The past year I’ve started sowing on March 3rd and this year I had to wait till April to start. Even now the soil is still a bit cold, but I can’t wait anymore. I had lots of seeds to sow because I didn’t sow anything earlier.<\/span>

The first thing I’ve sown are carrots, parsley, parsnip, and garlic. During the winter I made some toilet paper seed strips so carrot and parsnip sowing were incredibly easy this year. I’ve decided to do vertical lines instead of horizontal ones because of last season’s problems with harvesting. It was very moist while I was harvesting and I had trouble finding the rows. This year I did vertical ones. It will be easier to follow the vertical line. <\/span>

Garlic will still be in horizontal rows. I can easily find it. I didn’t buy the garlic this year. I just used the ones I had at home from my cooking supplies. I have no idea which variety it is. <\/span>

I’ve also sown my peas. They have always been sown in vertical lines but this year I decided to sow it in horizontal rows. They will be shorter this way because my beds are around 1,5m wide, but I’m thinking this way maybe it will be easier to harvest because I won’t have to move the bag every step I make. I’ve sown 2 rows together, then made a path and new 2 rows. This way I’ll have enough room to stand between them and also I’ll have enough soil for hiling up. I’ve sown Progress 9 and Italian wonder varieties. They are both early and short so they will come early enough to avoid the summer heat and I don’t need to use the climbing net. <\/span>

I’ve also sown some early lettuce, radishes, and early chard.  I will sow all these vegetables more times in a year to have a continuous harvest.<\/span>

I had to water all my beds after sowing because the soil is dry as powder as you can see in the photos. I’ve never had such dry sowing soil. We usually had nice moist soil for sowing, sometimes even on the border of dirt but this year is different. We didn’t get any decent rain in a long time and there is no rain in forecasts for the next 14 days so I guess I’ll have to continue on watering. <\/span>

<\/span>At least my winter chicory and lamb’s lettuce enjoy this weather so I have nice harvests. Even when I forget to bring my harvest bags.<\/span><\/p>\n
