The first few blackberry canes we got from our neighbor from Germany, it was the first thornless variety that came to Croatia. They weren&#8217;t even sold here, people went to Germany to buy them and we managed to get a few canes and they have been growing since then. From those couple of canes, we managed to propagate blackberries and now we have two long trellises that give us up to 60kg of blackberries a year, depending on the weather.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-zddw0jCg7tQ\/XxCajWR1PsI\/AAAAAAAAJQU\/uqjMbnBv6ic2XsAK0CJzziVuprerJNauACLcBGAsYHQ\/s2048\/100_7294.JPG?ssl=1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1536\" data-original-width=\"2048\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-zddw0jCg7tQ\/XxCajWR1PsI\/AAAAAAAAJQU\/uqjMbnBv6ic2XsAK0CJzziVuprerJNauACLcBGAsYHQ\/w640-h480\/100_7294.JPG?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>But our &#8220;trellis&#8221; is slightly different than the normal ones. Every year the selected few branches are tied to the next level(wires usually have 5-7 levels). The annual branches are left to produce fruits and then cut down, but the main vine branches are left alone.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-siiPOX-D07s\/XxCbGRL43PI\/AAAAAAAAJQg\/3N5CY6WyMfMRh89akyhmxJUL3T9UmmcswCLcBGAsYHQ\/s2048\/IMG_20200716_194259.jpg?ssl=1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2048\" data-original-width=\"1152\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-siiPOX-D07s\/XxCbGRL43PI\/AAAAAAAAJQg\/3N5CY6WyMfMRh89akyhmxJUL3T9UmmcswCLcBGAsYHQ\/w360-h640\/IMG_20200716_194259.jpg?resize=360%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Once the main branches reach the top level they are taken to the other side, forming a tunnel or a pergola depending on the preferences. It takes up to 15-20 years to form a perfect &#8220;brajda&#8221;. But, once the brajda is formed the plant requires almost no maintenance, except for the cutting of the excess branches. Almost every old house in eastern Croatia has a long &#8220;brajda&#8221; in front of the house, which gives natural shade during the hot summer days.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Since the blackberries aren&#8217;t perennial plants and their canes die after 2 seasons at best there is no way to make an actual &#8220;brajda&#8221;, but we used the technique of making it to control our berries and so far it has been working perfectly.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-TXJNnOuPoRM\/XxCbvxU04NI\/AAAAAAAAJQ0\/fUagusiXiPQ6LD65pIyFOwS3WO2idiGRACLcBGAsYHQ\/s2048\/100_1067.JPG?ssl=1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1536\" data-original-width=\"2048\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-TXJNnOuPoRM\/XxCbvxU04NI\/AAAAAAAAJQ0\/fUagusiXiPQ6LD65pIyFOwS3WO2idiGRACLcBGAsYHQ\/w640-h480\/100_1067.JPG?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div>Canes that grow in the first year are secured to the place where they will be needed and left to grow to the height they want.
