 Enjoying spring sun in the middle of January? Well, yes, that’s exactly what happened to us this week. The past 10 days have been unusually warm, temperatures have been over 14\u00b0C (57\u00b0F) throughout the week, and even night temperatures haven’t been under 10\u00b0C (50\u00b0F). This is really weird weather for us considering our daily average temperature for January is -0.5\u00b0C (32.9\u00b0F), with minimums reaching to -25\u00b0C (-13\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Of course, the warm weather lured us outside to do everything we could. After smashing the concrete on Old year’s day, we made the first garden frame for the new vegetable bed in the side part of the yard. The 100yr old oak boards have been painted with hydro insulating paint and covered with nylon. Now all that’s left is to add compost and manure. We’ll do this once we finish the steps and terraces. We’ll buy the compost from the same seller that sells gravel, so there’s no point to order twice.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

I had time to take care of the small front flowerbed. I didn’t get the chance to cut or clean the bed earlier, so now I had time to trim the lavender, rosemary, and curry plant. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The warm weather woke up my spring flowers, the bed is full of small tulips, daffodils, and irises so I had to be extra careful while raking and cleaning. Of course, I stepped on some of them and damaged a couple of plants, but hopefully, they’ll be fine. There’s still plenty of time for them to recover. <\/p>\n

The warm period was also great for my balcony spinach, which has finally grown a bit more, and now I can finally start harvesting the small leaves. I’m using them garnish in my salads, which I eat every day, and since they are homegrown, they give a nice fuller taste to the lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers, which during the winter don’t have much taste. <\/p>\n

Sadly the warm period ended very abruptly, with damaging north winds, which made us stop working on our yard. The temperature has dropped to 1.4\u00b0C (34.52\u00b0F) in less than 12 hours, and since yesterday we’re back to normal January. We woke up frozen to -6\u00b0C(21\u00b0F) I guess this brings the garden work to an end for now. All we can do is wait for another crazy warm period to finish the new garden, steps, and terrace. <\/p>\n
