Summer seedlings

Now that all the spring seedlings have been planted, I finally got the time to organize the rest of the seedlings. They were everywhere. Some were kept in the front yard, others in the side yard, and some even in the basement. Now was the time to gather all of them and see which are worth leaving and which were not.

Most of the seedlings that were left for later sowing are the after-frost flowers, some perennials for next year, and the tomatoes that were sown in March. As I suspected the March sown seedlings are nowhere near ready to be planted in the garden, so they will have to wait at least 20 days more in the containers.

There have also been dozens of empty containers with no seedlings in them. All of those containers were gathered and thrown in the small veggie garden, where I’ll see if there will be any plants from them. Sometimes the seeds decided to germinate right after I throw them outside, and I end up with a bunch of seedlings in the trash. I’ve emptied some of the containers a few weeks ago into our scrap pile, and now I have a bunch of seedlings growing from the pile of basically trash, so I’m not doing that same mistake again.

Once I managed to downsize the number of small pots on the terrace, I finally had the room to move my brassicas to the first terrace. They were supposed to be on the second terrace, but it’s still not finished so I had to wait with the move. I can’t keep them in the front yard anymore, the temperature is too high and the brassicas looked boiled every evening. I actually lost two smaller plants due to the heat, so I had to move them to a cooler area. The first terrace is in the shade during the afternoon, so the brassica leaves can’t be burned by the sun. It would be a shame to lose them now that they are growing so well, and the leaves are almost ready for a first harvest.

I’ve also moved here my small oleander plants and the broken wisteria. The balcony is now too hot for them to grow while they are so tiny. As I thought the Wisteria has started growing new branches and leaves, and the broken branches will start recuperating in no time.

After moving the brassicas I finally got the room for my chili peppers, which have been moved to the sunny front yard. They seem to enjoy as much sun as possible and don’t mind the heat, as long as they get enough water. Some of them are already blooming and others have buds, so they will be happy with some extra heat.

I still need to repot the March sown kale, which will stay on the terrace together with the rest of the brassicas, and divide the kohlrabi seedlings which are now all in one container and that’s pretty much it when it comes to seedlings. I will not have any new containers on the terrace, since I’ve made a small improvised germination box in the garden. This is actually a very good thing, I really don’t have time for any more new containers in the front or side yard. I have plants all over the place and the yard is slowly turning into a jungle of pots. If only this would mean that I will have huge amounts of veggies in the end.
