After a rough time with the weather, we finally got some nice weather and it was time to start getting some flowers and herbs for the balcony. Last week I got my delivery from our local family farm and I got my herb and flower seedlings. I should still get the delivery of the vegetable seedlings but that will be in a couple of days.
I got just enough flowers to make my balcony even more crowded and leave us no room for sitting outside. I was thinking about growing flowers all over the balcony railing, but I’ll need to ask my hubby or my dad to make me flower hangers first. If they manage to make them over the summer, next year I will have dozens of pots with flowers. I’m thinking purple will be an excellent color. 😅
I bought a total of 40 Surfinias, Calibrachoas, and hanging dianthuses seedlings, all purple, of course, and 2 hanging baskets of Lotus maculatus. I never had Lotus before and haven’t seen it in the gardens in the villages around us, but I liked the flowers and the plant should be highly resistant to the sunburns and loves to be in full sun the whole day so it should like my balcony.
Surfinias and Calibrachoas are already flowering while Dianthuses are still without flowers but they will soon start growing them. Seedlings are completely healthy with excellent roots and in a couple of days they have been here they grew almost twice the size they were before.
Although it’s not common for Dianthuses to hang, the variety I bought is “Gorenjski nagelj” a Slovenian variety which is grown only as a hanging flower so in a couple of weeks I should have a hanging carpet of wonderful flowers.
I also got some herbs and decided to make a small herb garden on my balcony. I used an old flower stand and planted some mint, lemongrass, parsley, and basil. I also have some dwarf tomatoes, planted in the beer cans to use little space and I’m still thinking of sowing some chives and oregano. This way I’ll have some fresh herbs right next to my kitchen to use while cooking dinner.
With the warm weather, the smell of flowers and herbs on the balcony, and the lack of rain that makes me water all my plants 2 times a day it’s starting to look like summer. The only thing I’m waiting for now is for my lilies to start growing.
