Orchard surprise- first harvest

After a long rain period, on Friday, I finally got some dry weather to visit my garden. I thought I’d do some weeding because the garden is covered in weeds, but, instead, I ended up having my first big harvest.

Orchard, although it has been hit by two big frost waves in April it still survived and it’s started giving fruits.
For the first time after a long period, my cherry tree has fruits low enough for me to harvest them. Usually, all the fruits are on the top of the tree, but this year they are on the lower branches too.

Berries have also started to ripe so instead of weeding the raspberries and red currants I ended up harvesting them.

Red currants aren’t as productive this year as they were in past years but there is still enough, raspberries, on the other hand, are thriving this year and each cane has many fruits, I’ve harvested lots and this has just been the first harvest.

I’ve also harvested some baby lettuce and together with all the orchard fruits, this has been a really nice harvest.

But, not all the surprises that the orchard was hiding have been nice ones. In the last storm we had has knocked down an old sour cherry tree. So we had to clean it, and since the chainsaw was being used we also removed an old and dry cherry and a dried plum tree. There is now a big empty space, so I have to plan what we’ll plant there, probably some berries.

Despite the cold spring, frost days and huge amounts of rain we’re having the past couple of weeks orchard is still fruiting. A very nice and much-needed surprise.
