Orchard pruning part 2

We finally did it. The orchard has been pruned. We managed to find one warm enough day without the wind and finish with the apple pruning. This time my hubby helped me trim the higher branches, so we managed to prune all the trees in a couple of hours.

The temperatures have been very low during the past 14 days. Morning temperatures have reached -9°C (15°F), daily have been a bit closer to average, but the winds haven’t stopped blowing during the past 14 days, so the real feel is much lower.  Because of this trees are still completely asleep, and there’s not much life in the orchard or the forest next to us.

The forest flowers, which have started during February haven’t continued growing. The flowers that bloomed earlier are hanging around, but there are no new flowers present. Everything is still grey, even the grass isn’t growing.

Another issue is that there was no rain for a very long period. The winter was very dry and now it has been a month since a propper rain. The only thing good about this rainless period is that Srećko doesn’t get so dirty while digging around the orchard. Still, I decided to close the access to his artwork.

Like I said before, we managed to get one day of nice weather to finish pruning, but we didn’t get the time to clean the branches and suckers. We’ve left them on the floor, and they’re waiting for nicer weather to pick everything up. I was actually planning to save the suckers and use them for a small yard fence which I’ll need when we finish with the new yard bed.

Hopefully, the temperatures will now start rising, and we’ll finally have a proper spring with lots of new plants.

With all our medical issues and awful weather my pruning is way behind this year and probably won’t get done at all.

Lovely blue Scilla (bifola?) flower. Well done on getting your pruning done. Hope you have found room for your seedlings inside!
